The Clinch, April 2022
Rumpelstiltskin Gallery, Brooklyn – New York
The Clinch is a wink at the romantic novel genre, which for the longest time was women’s only vehicle to consume pornography in a socially accepted way. The term is used by the industry to denominate the image of the passionate embrace that traditionally illustrate their covers, and is also the name of a wrestling move. There is a tension between attraction and violence in this embrace, that forms a helix-like shape which makes the piece freestanding and able to be appreciated from all angles.
"Dandara Catete, a promising young Brazilian artist currently based in Madrid, has made a new work in situ – a twisting clinch of two disused mattresses. With aging, soiled, quilted surfaces, the mattresses swirl in an embrace that vacillates between poignant tenderness and abject violence.“
